Legends tell of the gods creating the dungeons as a challenge to mankind, and as a way for them to grow ever stronger. While the true nature of these mysterious places made of shifting corridors, opponents that recover from death between visits, and reappearing treasures remains a mystery, societies and cultures around the world have long since incorporated them into their way of life.
Those who brave these dangerous dungeons and bring their bounty back have come to be known as Adventurers, and their work is important to everyone. Monster parts are used to craft tools and medicine, rare items that have yet to be replicated through crafting are brought back to those who need them, and defeating a dungeon's boss prevents the other monsters inside from breaking free and wreaking havoc on the outside world.
Monuments capable of granting skills to those who wish to become adventurers dot the landscape, and it is now customary for new adventurers to visit one. None can know ahead of time what to expect from these monuments, but they've shaped entire careers before. Ney, who completed his formation and is now ready to enter the world of adventurers, must now receive a gift from one such monument.
